A ₱20-million Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA)–Cagayan State University (CSU) Tissue Culture Laboratory will soon rise at CSU–Sanchez Mira Campus following its groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, July 7, 2025.
The facility aims to produce disease-free and high-quality coconut plantlets to support the growth of the local coconut industry.
Leading the ceremony were PCA Administrator Dr. Dexter R. Buted, CSU OIC President Dr. Arthur G. Ibañez, ASEAN Engr., and CSU-SM Campus Executive Officer Dr. Rodel Francisco T. Alegado.
The event also gathered representatives from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), members of the Sanchez Mira Tall Coconut Farmers Association, and university officials.
Rev. Fr. Gil Manalo, SVD, officiated the blessing and groundbreaking rites, formally marking the start of construction for what is expected to become a major research and production hub for coconut in the region.
The project is part of the Coconut Industry Future Development Project (CIFDP) under its production area component, designed to strengthen the propagation of superior coconut varieties and ensure a sustainable supply of planting materials for farmers.
