Along with the Civil Service Commission (CSC)-Region II Office, CSC Calayan-Batanes Field Office, Local Government of Sanchez Mira, and various volunteer groups, Cagayan State University-Sanchez Mira (CSU-SM) joined the annual International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day on September 21 at Barangay Masisit.

Attendees from the campus were Dr. Jose Sheriff Panelo, dean of the College of Criminal Justice Education; Mr. Valentin Apostol, campus coordinator for the National Service Training Program (NSTP); Mr. Chris Ian Rodriguez, campus coordinator for Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC); together with other faculty and staff.

According to LGU Sanchez Mira, the conduct of ICC Day in the municipality was due to the invitation of Atty. Marites Lappay, acting director of CSC-Region II Office, to Mayor Abraham Bagasin.

Moreover, the Calayan Extension community also participated in the nationwide activity in response to the mandatory participation of the municipality in the celebration of the 124th Philippine Civil Service Month celebration.

Started by the Ocean Conservancy, ICC, which is held every third Saturday of September, is the world's largest volunteer effort for the ocean's health. It is different from other clean-up drives because volunteers not only pick up trash but also identify and record it in a standardized data card that will be instrumental in determining the effects of specific materials on ocean habitats.

Forester Helen Castillo of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office-Sanchez Mira explained how to fill up the Ocean Data Trash Form before the event started for the volunteers to record the trash to be collected in the area.
