Four students from Cagayan State University-Sanchez Mira (CSU-SM) reaped awards during the University-Wide Elimination for Science and Mathematics Quiz Bee of the Philippine Consortium for Science, Mathematics, and Technology (PCSMT) on March 7 at CSU-Andrews.
After securing a silver medal with 12 points in the Physics category, John Dave Manaday of the College of Engineering (COE) will be one of the university’s representatives at the national level.
"I didn't have any idea that I would be one of the qualifiers after the quiz until they announced it. We have only one day to review with our coach, Engr. John Paul D. Galvan, before the quiz bee, but what we review is not included. It is purely stock knowledge," Manaday said.
"The preparation of our participants from COE is a group effort with the faculty, especially with Dean Engr. Marvin D. Adorio, who is with us during the review. In the case of Mr. Manaday, he already completed his physics course, so he has a strong foundation when it comes to his category. Not to be boastful, but we know that we can compete with other campuses and courses when it comes to physics," Mrs. Mhell Ruth Ann Simon, one of participants’ coaches, stated.
In the Biology category, College of Agricultures’ (CA) Jaylord Trinidad won a bronze medal with 28 points, while Carlo Calitina placed 5th with 24 points.
Moreover, Yaoweng Dabalos of the College of Criminal Justice Education (CCJE) also claimed a bronze medal in the Chemistry category with 19 points.
Other participants who represented the campus were Ronan Ballinan (COE) in Physics, Christian Lloyd Guiang (CCJE) in Chemistry, and Maxlene Castillo and Jen-Jen Tabao (COE) in Mathematics. They were coached by Engr. John Paul Galvan for Physics, Mrs. Mhell Ruth Ann Simon for Mathematics, and Mrs. Joanna Rose Panergo for Chemistry and Biology.
With the theme "Innovation in Action: Shaping Tomorrow with Science, Mathematics, and Technology", the quiz bee was participated by nine CSU campuses with two participants in each of the Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics categories. Contestants compete individually in three elimination rounds: easy, average, and difficult.
